The Florida Department of Transportation reports the following lane and ramp closures on I-95 in the Daytona Beach/I-4 area thru January 16:

Sunday, January 10th to 16th
9 p.m. – 7 a.m. — Multiple lane closures north- and southbound for the bridge deck pour on the Bellevue Bridge.

One inside lane on both north- and southbound sides will be closed from north of US 92 to SR 421 for material trucking, base construction, paving, barrier wall relocation and striping.

The Bellevue Bridge remains closed.

Crews will reopen one southbound lane between US 92 and SR 421, for a total of three open southbound lanes.

The world’s first motorsports stadium will be ready for its debut later this month at the Rolex 24 At Daytona Weekend.

After more than two years of redeveloping its nearly mile-long front stretch, Daytona International Speedway’s (DIS) $400 million DAYTONA Rising project is near completion. On Tuesday, DIS received its temporary certificate of occupancy which allows us to begin moving into the facility and fully prepare for the upcoming race season. The world’s first motorsports stadium will be ready for its debut later this month at the Rolex 24 At Daytona Weekend.

Since kicking off the project in July 2013, DIS has celebrated tremendous milestones along the way including the DAYTONA Rising 500 groundbreaking ceremony, the first-ever DAYTONA Rising Escalator Duel to activate the new vertical transportation as well as the recent lighting of the massive identification sign.

“After more than two years of dedication and hard work, we’re thrilled that our new motorsports stadium is nearing completion,” said Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III. “We’re thankful for the tremendous support from our partners, project team and fans and can’t wait to welcome everyone during the Rolex 24 At Daytona.”

The Florida Department of Transportation advises drivers of two road openings that may help with traffic congestion, and with commute-planning during race week.

Interstate 95 (I-95) southbound will have three lanes open, and the Bellevue Bridge will have a soft opening.

Below are the changes to the roads:

• I-95 southbound from US 92 to State Road (SR) 421 has three lanes open – this is a permanent opening
  • Vehicles can head west on SR 421, to SR 415 south and either continue south into Seminole County or turn on SR 44 west to I-4.
• I-95 southbound from SR 421, to SR 44 has two lanes open with a 10-foot paved shoulder
  • Vehicles can head west on SR 44 to either SR 415 or I-4.
• Bellevue Bridge will have soft openings, during which the bridge will be open to vehicle traffic, Feb 17-22 (Race Week) and March 4-13 (Bike Week)
• Bellevue Bridge grand opening will be in April 2016.

The Florida Department of Transportation reports that from Sunday, June 19th, 2016 to Saturday, June 25th, 2016
I-95 Northbound and Southbound nighttime detours will be in effect between US 92 and SR 400 (Beville Road) in the Daytona Beach area.

The following detours are planned for installation of bridge beams over I-95.

• Tuesday, I-95 in both directions closed as follows: 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., I-95 southbound lanes will close and traffic will be detoured onto US 92. Traffic heading to I-4 westbound will be directed along US 92 west. Traffic continuing south will be directed to Williamson Boulevard south to Beville Road, where they can re-enter I-95 southbound; 10:30 p.m.- 6:30 a.m., I-95 northbound lanes will close and traffic will be detoured to onto eastbound Beville Road to Williamson Boulevard north to re-enter I-95 northbound at US 92.
• Thursday, 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., I-95 southbound lanes closed at US 92. Traffic will be detoured via US 92 for access to I-4 westbound and to Williamson Boulevard south to Beville Road for re-entry to I-95 southbound. From 9:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., one inside lane closed on I-95 northbound.
• Wednesday and Friday, the above nighttime detours and lane closures are possible if needed to complete placement of the beams over I-95.

It’s that time of year again. Temperatures are getting colder and thoughts are turning to warmer climates. This is the time of year when millions of snowbirds start planning their annual RV pilgrimage south to winter destinations.

For those in the northeast and eastern Canada, I-95 is the path that takes them there.  Most of them are headed for Florida, Georgia and the Gulf Coast.

Snowbirds don’t necessarily fit into a specific age group or category. They can be retirees, business owners, or others fortunate enough to take a good portion of the winter off. Many snowbirds are RVers who take their homes with them.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is suspending most construction-related lane closures on I-95 and other major state roads, for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

There will be no work requiring lane restrictions from Wednesday, November 25, though, Sunday, November 29. All major roads will be open to normal traffic.

Although no construction closures are scheduled over the holiday weekend, existing work zones will remain in effect; drivers may encounter construction workers and reduced speed limits.

Motorists are reminded to use caution while traveling through work zones and around barricades – equipment and temporary traffic configurations may remain in place.

FDOT is encouraging drivers to allow extra travel time and to use extra caution in existing work zones along state highways. Drivers are urged to make sure they buckle up, along with their passengers.

FDOT and other safety agencies also ask drivers to obey speed limits, get adequate rest before traveling, avoid distractions and never drink and drive.

Drivers also are urged to be prepared for unscheduled highway closures due to accidents, disabled vehicles or other events.

Motorists should be alert to changing weather conditions while traveling.

If you have the stamina or a few extra passengers that can share the driving, you can go nonstop… and this article is not for you. But if you’re the kind of road warrior that doesn’t want to spend the first day at their destination recovering from the trip, then read on.

Just to keep things simple, New England to Florida (let’s say Boston to Orlando) is about a 22 hour drive or about 1300 miles. That’s including stops for gas, meals and breaks. For most travelers, you can comfortably make the journey with two days of driving and one overnight stop.

That first day can get a little frustrating as you pass through “the northeast corridor” with mostly urban areas and heavy traffic. At the end of the day you’ll be somewhere near the Virginia/North Carolina border. Your next day of travel is much more rural and by the end of that second day of driving you’ll be in Orlando.

Here’s our suggested itinerary:

Day One: New England (Boston) to Roanoke Rapids, NC (638 miles)

Timing is everything on your first day. Scheduling to avoid urban areas during heavy traffic is important and will save you time and frustration. As you can see from the table below, leaving Boston at 6:00 am will get you through New York, Baltimore and Washington between rush hours.

• 6:00 am : With a full tank of gas and breakfast behind you, you’re on the road. Head down I-95 to New York City. An alternate route to NYC would be I-90 to I-84 to I-287, over the Tappen Zee Bridge to the Garden State Parkway south to I-95 (NJ Turnpike). Click here to view this route.

Travel Tip: Avoid getting gas in Connecticut if you can. They have some of the highest gas prices along I-95.

• By 6:45 am you should be approaching Providence, Rhode Island
• By 8:15 am  you should be approaching New Haven, Connecticut
• By 10:30 am  you should be approaching New York City
• By 11:30 am you should be south of New York City on the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95).

Travel Tip: There are some great service areas along the New Jersey Turnpike where you can stretch, gas up or grab a bite to eat.

• By 12:00 pm you should be approaching the Delaware Memorial Bridge
• 12:30 – 1:30 pm: Stop at one of the Maryland Service Plazas, have lunch, take a break and gas up before you leave. You can allow up to an hour here, you’ll still be in great shape to hit Baltimore and Washington before the rush.
• By 2:30 pm you should be approaching Baltimore, Maryland. Traffic may be heavy but still better than in an hour or two.
• By 3:00 pm you should be approaching Washington, DC. Rush hour is just getting started but you can beat the worst of it by not stopping along the route here.
• By 4:00 pm you are leaving the traffic mess behind you, just a few more miles and it should be smooth sailing.
• By the time you get to Richmond, Virginia it should be around 4:30 pm. Gas up for the final stretch.

Travel Tip: Try I-295 around Richmond and Petersburg if the traffic is heavy. I-295 is a newer, more rural alignment with less traffic.

• 5:30 pm: you should be crossing the Virginia/North Carolina state line.
• 6:00 pm: Arrive in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Check into your hotel and head out for supper. I-95, exit 173 is a popular overnight stop for travelers and a halfway point between Boston and Orlando.

Lane Closures

• Sunday, July 30th, 2017 to Saturday, August 5th, 2017
  Sunday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., and Saturday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., I-95 southbound inside lane closures north of U.S. 92.
• Sunday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., northbound and southbound I-95 single lane closures at Spruce Creek, S.R. 421 and I-4.
• Sunday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m., single lane closures eastbound and westbound U.S. 92 at I-95.

This project involves widening Interstate 95 (I-95) from four lanes to six lanes from north of State Road (S.R.) 44 to north of U.S. 92 (International Speedway Boulevard). The southern project limit will tie into the recently completed I-95 widening project to the south (from south of S.R. 406 to north of S.R. 44). The project scope also includes the reconstruction of the systems interchange with I-4, I-95 and U.S. 92.

This project reconstructs the I-95 interchange leading to and from I-4 and U.S. 92, which will increase mobility and connectivity. It will also increase safety for merging, exiting and through-traffic. The project will eliminate a left-side merge ramp onto I-95 from U.S. 92, just a short distance to the south. Additional lanes will be constructed along I-95 allowing vehicles traveling through the area to continue in dedicated lanes, and vehicles entering and exiting I-95 to be separated into dedicated entrance and exit lanes.

Biketoberfest® officially kicks off with a press conference Thursday, October 19, at 10 a.m. at Daytona International Speedway. The event is open to the public. Held on the Harley-Davidson Thunder Alley Stage next to the FPL Solar Pavilion in the Midway, this fan-friendly area is also a major hub of Biketoberfest® activity.
